Glumdalclitch had done everything she could (делала все, что могла) to make things easier for me (для того, чтобы облегчить мое положение: «сделать ситуацию легче для меня»; thing — вещь, предмет; /обычно во мн. Several times a day (по нескольку раз на день) she said she was tired riding (она говорила, что устала ехать верхом) and wanted to rest for a while (и хочет немного: «/какое-то/ время» отдохнуть; while — время, /неопределенный/ промежуток времени). Then she would take me out of my box (тогда она вынимала меня из ящика; would здесь указывает на многократность, привычность действия) so that I could walk about a little (чтобы я мог немного прогуляться) and get some fresh air (и подышать свежим воздухом: «получить сколько-нибудь свежего воздуха»).

chance [CRns], private ['praIvIt], easier ['JzIq]

The journey took us ten weeks. We stopped at eighteen large towns and many villages on the way. In fact the farmer stopped to hold shows any time that he saw the chance of making money. I even performed my tricks in private homes, if the people were rich enough to pay the farmer's price.

It was October 26th when we arrived in Lorbrulgrud The farmer found lodgings on the main street in the centre of the city (фермер остановился: «нашел жилье/комнату» на главной улице в центре города; lodging/s/ — /временное/ жилье; /сдаваемая/ комната, квартира), not far from the royal palace (недалеко от королевского дворца). He hired a large room (он нанял большую комнату/залу), about three or four hundred feet wide (шириною в триста или четыреста футов), with a very large table in the centre (с очень большим столом в центре). He had a border made around the edge of the table (он заказал сделать ограждение по краю стола; to have smth. для себя; border — граница; кромка; кайма, бордюр; фриз; борт), about three feet high (вышиной фута в три), to prevent me from falling off (чтобы предохранить меня от падения). Within a very short time I was giving ten shows a day

By this time I was able to speak the language quite well (в это время я /уже/ мог довольно хорошо говорить на /местном/ языке) and understand what was said (и понимать, что говорилось). Glumdalclitch had also taught me the letters of their alphabet (научила меня также буквам их алфавита) and I was learning to read their language (и я учился читать на их языке). She had even continued to teach me during our journey (она продолжала обучать меня даже во время путешествия), carrying a small book in her pocket (нося/имея с собой в кармане маленькую книжку). — To me, of course, the book was the size of a very large and heavy atlas — It was from this book about their religion that I learned to read

alphabet ['xlfqbet], heavy ['hevI], religion [rI'lIG(q)n]

While we were staying at the inn (когда/пока мы находились = за время нашего пребывания в гостинице) I became quite ill (я стал совсем больным). I was given less and less rest between the shows I was too tired to eat properly much of the time (большей частью я бывал слишком уставшим для того, чтобы как следует поесть; proper — присущий, свойственный; правильный, должный; надлежащий) and I soon lost weight (и я потерял вес = в весе) and became extremely thin (и стал крайне худ; thin — тонкий; худой). I could see that the farmer was worried about me I think he had decided (я думаю, он решил) to make as much money as he could (заработать как можно больше: «столько денег, сколько /только/ мог») before I died (пока я не умер). A courtier from the royal palace came one day (однажды из королевского дворца пришел придворный) and ordered the farmer to bring me to Court (и приказал фермеру доставить меня ко двору). The Queen and her ladies wanted to see the show Some of the Queen's ladies had already been to see me at the inn

properly ['prOpqlI], weight [weIt], courtier ['kLtIq]

Her Majesty was delighted with my tricks Afterwards she asked me some questions (после она задала мне несколько вопросов) about my own country and my travels (относительно моей родины и путешествий). I answered her as clearly and in as few words as I could She held out her hand (она протянула мне руку) and, after being placed on a table (и /я/, после того как меня поставили на стол), I put my lips to the tip of one of her fingers She asked me whether I would like to live at Court I answered that I was the slave of my master (я ответил, что я раб своего хозяина), but that I would be proud to live at Court (но я был бы счастлив остаться при дворе; proud — гордый; испытывающий чувство гордости, удовлетворения) if it was for me to decide (если бы имел возможность решать).

delighted [dI'laItId], question ['kwesC(q)n], proud [praVd]

Her Majesty was delighted with my tricks. Afterwards she asked me some questions about my own country and my travels. I answered her as clearly and in as few words as I could. She held out her hand and, after being placed on a table, I put my lips to the tip of one of her fingers. She asked me whether I would like to live at Court. I answered that I was the slave of my master, but that I would be proud to live at Court if it was for me to decide.

The farmer was ready enough (фермер был рад возможности: «вполне готов») to sell me for a good price (продать меня за хорошую цену). He sold me for one thousand pieces of gold (он продал меня за тысячу золотых) and he seemed satisfied with the sale (и казалось, был доволен сделкой; sale — продажа; торговая сделка). I don't think he expected me to live another month (думаю, он не надеялся, что я проживу еще /хотя бы/ месяц; to expect — ждать, ожидать; надеяться, предполагать; думать, полагать).

I was now a servant of the Queen I asked her whether my little nurse, Glumdalclitch, might be allowed to continue to take care of me When the farmer was asked (когда спросили /об этом/ фермера), he replied that he would be very pleased to have his daughter at Court (он ответил, что будет очень доволен, если его дочь останется при дворе). The poor girl couldn't hide her joy (бедная девочка не могла скрыть свою радость), so the matter was arranged (и так дело было устроено). The farmer said goodbye (попрощался), adding that he had left me in good service (прибавив, что оставляет меня на прекрасной службе). I made him a slight bow (я слегка ему поклонился: «сделал легкий/небольшой поклон»), but I did not say a word (но не сказал ни слова).

satisfied ['sxtIsfaId], reply [rI'plaI], daughter ['dLtq]

The farmer was ready enough to sell me for a good price. He sold me for one thousand pieces of gold and he seemed satisfied with the sale. I don't think he expected me to live another month.

I was now a servant of the Queen. I asked her whether my little nurse, Glumdalclitch, might be allowed to continue to take care of me. When the farmer was asked, he replied that he would be very pleased to have his daughter at Court. The poor girl couldn't hide her joy, so the matter was arranged. The farmer said goodbye, adding that he had left me in good service. I made him a slight bow, but I did not say a word.

Afterwards the Queen wished to know (после королева пожелала узнать) why I had behaved so coldly to the farmer (почему я повел себя с фермером так холодно; to behave — вести себя, поступать, держаться). I explained to her (я рассказал ей; to explain — объяснять; раскрывать, разъяснять) what my life with him had been like (какова была моя жизнь у него; like — подобный, похожий; what it is like — что это из себя представляет). I also said that the farmer would almost certainly have asked a higher price for me (я также сказал ей, что фермер почти наверняка запросил бы за меня более высокую цену) if he had thought I would live (если бы думал, что я выживу). I added that I felt sure I would soon recover my health (что я скоро восстановлю свое здоровье) as a servant of a great and good Queen (будучи слугой /столь/ великой и доброй королевы), who was the Darling of the World (которая есть любовь вселенной; darling — дорогой, -ая, любимый, -ая; любимец) and the Delight of her Subjects (и восторг/услада своих подданных). (Glumdalclitch, on our way to the Court (по дороге во дворец), had taught me some of the things (научила меня нескольким фразам) she had heard the Queen's ladies say (которые она слыхала от фрейлин королевы)).

explain [Ik'spleIn], sure [SL, SVq]

Afterwards the Queen wished to know why I had behaved so coldly to the farmer. I explained to her what my life with him had been like. I also said that the farmer would almost certainly have asked a higher price for me if he had thought I would live. I added that I felt sure I would soon recover my health as a servant of a great and good Queen, who was the Darling of the World and the Delight of her Subjects. (Glumdalclitch, on our way to the Court, had taught me some of the things she had heard the Queen's ladies say.)
